TREATMENT OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE AND SENSITIVE TEETH

Treatment of toothache and gum problems

Inflammation of the periodontium or gingivitis is a major problem for many people. We often see cases where the teeth are caries-free but the patient loses teeth one after the other. The main causes of periodontitis leading to tooth loss are unremoved tartar, genetic susceptibility, poor oral hygiene or a combination of these factors. Despite the prevention and regular treatment of periodontal disease, the gums may become inflamed and so-called pockets may form at the gum line. If this is the case the inflammation of the periodontium can be treated by cleaning the gums under the gums, i.e. by curetting.

Periodontology is a specialised field of dentistry. Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease of the tissues surrounding the tooth caused by bacteria. This is the speciality of a periodontist.

What do I need to know about gingivitis?

Tartar is not only deposited on the visible parts of the teeth - if the gums separate from the teeth, tartar can also form in the areas under the gums. Lots of bacteria stick to it and they keep the gums and then the periodontium permanently inflamed.

  • In gingivitis, the gums are red, may bleed and swell. It can bleed on its own when you brush your teeth. As the process worsens, so-called premature periodontitis may develop, at which point the inflammation may spread to deeper tissues.
  • The main reason for gingivitis is that the patient cannot clean the boundary between tooth and gum properly:
  • either because they do not brush often enough,
Or because they do not use their toothbrush effectively enough.

Why is it important to detect a dead tooth?

It is important because although the symptoms are mild, this inflammation is a nodule in the body that can be associated with secondary diseases, as bacteria can be spread throughout the body via the bloodstream.
